We have helped many organisations to appraise, and improve, the environmental/sustainability impacts of their policies, plans and programmes.  Previous and current work includes:

  • SEA of five National Policy Statements on energy for DECC (with Entec)
  • SEA of Thames Estuary 2100, the 100-year flood risk management strategy for the Tidal Thames, for/with the Environment Agency
  • Appraisal of Sustainability of HS2 (with Booz/Temple)
  • Supporting local and regional authorities in carrying out integrated sustainability appraisal/SEAs of their plans, including

  • Running SA/SEA training courses, e.g. for Royal Town Planning Institute (twice a year), Countryside Council for Wales, One NorthEast, Government of Qatar, Department for International Development, Iranian Ministry of Planning and Organisation
  • Critical analyses of SA/SEAs, e.g. oil/gas licensing for Friends of the Earth
  • Preparation of a distance learning course on SEA for United Nations Development Programme (with TRL)
  • Review of environmental reports for the Irish Environmental Protection Agency
  • Preparation of SA/SEA guidance:
    • Advice notes on SEA for forestry and waste, for the Irish Environmental Protection Agency
    • Implementation of the SEA Directive, for the (then) ODPM

Riki Therivel has written three books and many articles on strategic environmental assessment, and taught many courses on the subject.
